Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a tourist attraction located in Montrose County, Colorado, United States. This canyon is a part of Gunnison National Park. The national park organized by US National Park Service System. The park has 12 miles of the 48-mile long. Why it is called Black Canyon? It is because of the canyon steepness makes the sunlight difficult to penetrate into its depth and make the canyon is often covered by shadow. It is make the rocky walls look black. The Black Canyon National Park inaugurated as a national park on October 21, 1999.

You can entry the Gunnison National Park by used two primary entrances: South rim entrance and North rim entrance (There is no bridge across the canyon). The south rim entrance is located 15 miles east of Montrose. The north rim is located 11 miles south of Crawford. You can use both of the entrance except in the winter, because the north rim is closed in the winter. In the winter season, only south rim entrance is opened. 

South rim and north rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park have different facilities. In the south rim there are one campground for tent and RV camping (there are electrical hook-ups), and nature trails for hiking. In the north rim, there are a small-primitive campground and natural trails for hiking.

If you go down to the river, you can use vehicle via east portal road at the south rim (The road has 16% grade and only prohibited to vehicles over 22 feet in length) or by hiking use routes (unmaintained trails) on the north and south rim). You need about 2 hours to hiked down an 2-4 hours to hike up depending on which route is taken and on your ability. There are poison ivy that grows abundantly, so long sleeves and hiking boots are recommended. If you want to camp in Black Canyon Colorado, you should consider the flow rate of the Gunnison river because when the flow rate is high, it can wash out the camp sites.

Besides camping and hiking, you can also climb in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. But it just allowed for advanced climbers because of its difficulties. This canyon is popular place for traditional climbing. 
All attraction in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park:- SOB route (the route to the river is very heavy because of steep drop offs, loose rocks, and poisonous ivy)

How to get there: 
Public transportation is not available to from Montrose to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. You can rent bus or airplane service in Montrose, Gunnison or Grand junction. 
South rim: When you arrive at the intersection with U.S Highway 50 east of Montrose, go to 7 miles north on CO Highway 347. 
North rim (closed to vehicles in the winter): The north rim is located 11 miles southwest from Crawford. You can go there by using CO Highway 92, approximately 3 miles south from Crawford, you turn west on Black Canyon Road and follow the road signs to the park. The road is unpaved for the last 7 miles.
