Camping at Crater Lake National Park

Carter Lake National Park is a tourist attraction located in Southern Oregon, United States. The nearest city to the lake is Klamath Falls. The lake located about 60 miles northwest of the Klamath Falls, and about 80 miles of Medford City. Crater lake is organized by US National Park Service System. Crater lake is registered as national park on May 1981. You can enjoy deep blue color and water clarity in this lake. Crater lake located in the Cascade Mountains. It was formed around 7,700 years ago by the great explosion of Mount Mazama. The explosion make the Mount Mazama collapsed and made a caldera. By years, the caldera filled by water and Crater Lake was formed (Some time, tragic disaster can make beautiful landscape).
Crater Lake has maximum deep around 594 m (the deepest lake in US). Crater lake has width about 5-6 miles. There are two small islands inside of the lake, Wizard island and Phantom ship. Wizard island is a cinder cone that located near the western shore of Crater Lake. The Island has size about 128 ha. Phantom ship is a volcanic rock ridge that located near the southern shore of Crater Lake. The rock ridge is resembling a sailing ship, this is why its called phantom ship.
In addition to the lake, you can see many fumaroles and hot springs in here. And "some activity" remains exist in the lake floor. This is shows that Mazama mountain may erupt once again in the future (there are a beast in beauty).

What you can do in Crater lake National Park:

  • Enjoy the Deepest Lake in US : Crater lake is the deepest lake in the US and has beautiful scenery ( blue water that surrounded by cliffs can make you wonder how beautiful it is.
  • Explore "Old Man" Forests : The lake just occupies less than 10% of the national park. Beside the lake, there are old forests (ponderosa pines, ancient whitebark pines) covered the landscape. The fauna in the forest are black bears, mountain lions, elk, and owl.
  • Explore the rim (Collapsed Volcano): You can enjoy the lake view from the above. You can see a full landscape from here.

Interesting Place in the Crater Lake:

  • Cleetwood Cove Trail : The Cleetwood Cove trail originates on the north side of the lake. There are dock for boat tours. You need hiking from Rim Dive for 1 mil. If you want walk to the lake from the rim, you should use this trail because this trail is the lake access.
  • Phantom Ship Overlook : This is a place to see full phantom ship. You can drive your car to get this place.
  • Watchman Peak Trail: This place is perfect place to enjoy the rim at one location. It is just need hiking 2 miles (round trip). The trail is well maintained, don't worry to get lose. Perfect sunset is waiting for you in the watchman peak.
  • Discovery Point Trail: This point offered nice open panoramic views from north to the east side. This place located not far from the Rim Village.
  • Cloudcap Overlook: This place is the highest paved road in Oregon. The Cloudcap offered a scenic overlook and panoramic lake views. Don't forget to bring a warm coat if you want to go here.
  • The Plaikni Falls trail (the newest trail on the Crater Lake park).
The park is open all time (year round, 24 hours a day). But you should consider the closed road in specific season. Many park roads, trails, and facilities are closed in specific season. 

Facilities:

  1. The Visitor Center at Park Headquarters (daily open from 10 am-4pm)
  2. The Backcountry Permits Office at Park Headquarters (daily open from 8 am - 4 pm)
  3. The Rim Village Cafe & Gift Shop ( open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 pm - 4 pm, except when the road to this village is closed)
  4. The RIm Village Restrooms (open 24 hours, except when the road to this village is closed).

How to get there:

  1. From Medford: Used Highway 62 towards to west entrance of the Crater Lake National Park
  2. From Klamath Falls: Used Highway 97 towards to Highway 62 and you will arrived at south south entrance of the Crater Lake National Park
  3. From Eugene, Portland: Interstate 5 (south of Eugene) - Highway 58 - Highway 97 - Highway 138. Stay in Highway 138 and you will arrived at north entrance of the Crater Lake National Park.
  4. From Roseburg: Used Highway 138 and stay in this highway, you will arrived at the north entrance of the park.
You can arrive here by car, there is no public transportation in the crater lake national park. The closest airports are in Klamath Falls and Medford. You can rent a car from both airports. You can use train (Am Trak) that has daily service to Klamath Falls. There is shuttle runs from the Am Trak station to Rim Village.
